A new accessible Canadian opera

Aureas Voces has been working on an opera “Jimmy & Rosalia” for over a year, written by Founder and Artistic Director Nick Veltmeyer along with co-librettist Anna Lewton-Brain. The opera tells the tragic love story between a shepherd boy and young woman whose love transcends social boundaries and even death, and is based on George Fredrich Handel’s opera, Acis and Galatea, and the folk songs and stories or Nova Scotia, as collected by Hellen Creighton, Canada’s “first lady of folklore.”  Handel’s opera was originally performed in a rural outdoor setting during an outbreak of the plague that closed the theatres in London. Aureas Voces will be presenting their new opera that showcases the depth and beauty of Canadian settler folk music with an all-youth cast of rising stars.
